Privacy Policy

Your reading is private. Here's exactly what we collect and why.

Last updated: May 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information ERead Assist ("we", "us") collects when you use our reading platform, how we use it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. We try to keep this in plain English.

1. What we collect

When you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, name and profile picture. We do not see your Google password.

While you use ERead Assist we also collect:

  • The books you upload (we store the text content)
  • Your reading progress (current page, last opened time)
  • Voice-coach recordings — used only to score your pronunciation, then discarded
  • Reading-session metrics (duration, words read, WPM, pronunciation scores)
  • Subscription status and a record of payments you have made

2. What we don't do

  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We do not use your uploaded books to train AI models.
  • We do not share your reading activity with advertisers.
  • We do not store your payment card details — Stripe handles that.

3. Third-party services we use

  • Google — to authenticate your sign-in
  • OpenAI — to power the voice coach (Whisper for transcription, TTS for read-aloud, GPT-5.2 for word definitions and pronunciation scoring). Per OpenAI's API policy, your data is not used to train their models.
  • Stripe — to process payments securely
  • MongoDB — to store your library and progress

4. Why we collect this data

  • To provide the Service (e.g. show your library when you sign in)
  • To improve your reading experience (e.g. continue-reading widget)
  • To bill you correctly for Premium passes
  • To diagnose technical problems and prevent abuse
  • To send you transactional emails (account, billing, expiry reminders)

5. How long we keep your data

  • Books, progress and sessions: as long as your account is open.
  • Voice-coach audio: discarded immediately after scoring.
  • Payment records: 7 years (to comply with UK tax law).
  • Account closure: data deleted within 30 days, except for legally required records.

6. Your rights (UK GDPR / EU GDPR)

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct any inaccurate data
  • Delete your account and personal data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Export a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Object to certain processing
  • Withdraw consent at any time

To exercise any of these, email forrestacres2023@icloud.com. We respond within 30 days.

7. Cookies and storage

ERead Assist stores a session token in your browser's localStorage to keep you signed in. We do not use marketing or tracking cookies.

8. Children's privacy

ERead Assist is designed to be safe for learners aged 5+. We require accounts to be held by someone aged 13 or older, with parental supervision for younger users. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent.

9. Security

We use HTTPS encryption in transit, MongoDB access controls at rest, and bearer-token authentication. No system is 100% secure — please use a strong, unique Google account password.

10. International transfers

Our service providers (Google, OpenAI, Stripe) may process data outside the UK/EU under Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards.

11. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or in-app at least 14 days before they take effect.
